5 common soundproofing mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Friday, 11 July 2025
Soundproofing is a key issue in any construction or renovation project. However, even the most experienced professionals can fall into certain traps that compromise the acoustic performance of buildings. Here are the 5 most common soundproofing mistakes, along with tips on how to avoid them.
1. Underestimating impact noise
Many projects focus on airborne noise (voices, television), but neglect impact noise, such as footsteps or chairs being moved. These sounds travel directly through structures and can quickly become a source of complaints.
The solution: Incorporate a high-performance acoustic treatment from the design stage. Our tested and certified systems guarantee effective impact noise reduction.
2. Not considering the complete assembly
Relying on a single products’ data can lead to misleading results. The overall performance can only depend on the entire composition of the floor/ceiling assembly, which includes everything from the floor covering to the ceiling finish, and everything in between.
The solution: Use acoustic assemblies that have been tested and validated according to current standards. Consult experts to choose the right combination of materials.
3. Misunderstanding how acoustic tests are performed
STC/ASTC measure airborne noises transmission while IIC/AIIC measure impact noises transmission of only assemblies never just a product. It's also important to understand how testing is performed, where and with what. Lab tests (STC/IIC) are done under controlled, ideal conditions and often represent the best-case scenario, while field tests (ASTC/AIIC) reflect real-world performance of an assembly as it is tested in-situ.
The solution: Always ask which assembly was tested and under what conditions (lab vs. field) to ensure you're making a true apples-to-apples comparison.
5. Thinking about sound insulation too far in the process
Sound insulation should never be an afterthought; it should be on top of mind as early as the conceptual stage. Poor planning can lead to costly modifications or renovations and even litigation.
The solution: Talk acoustic from the start of the project. Determine targets, budgets, and discuss with your experts. This saves time, avoids surprises and issues, and ensures lasting comfort for occupants.
